Books I read in April

Books I've read throughout April 2026

This month I’ve managed to read another 4 books taking my total for the year to 16. I’m probably at the amount I would usually read in previous years. Not to brag but I should be half way to my yearly target next month, who would have guessed it?

The Last Devil to Die

The first book I read was the fourth Thursday Murder Club novel which follows the death of one of Stephens friends Kuldesh, while Elizabeth deals with the decline of Stephens health. Reading the book I thought the ending was quite a surprise, as I originally didn’t expect who the killer was till late on. It was nice to see Joyce take the lead in this case showing how her character developed throughout the series. While the main story was developing Elizabeth was dealing with Stephens worsening dementia, leading to Stephen seeking out euthanasia. Overall I liked the book and seeing how everyone deals with the chaos at Choopers Chase.

The Impossible Fortune

The second book I read was the fifth Thursday Murder Club novel which followed the marriage of Joyce’s daughter and Ron’s family needing to deal with the abusive relationship his daughter is in. In terms of the impossible fortune it was Joyce’s son in law best man and his business partner who were paid in bit coin many years ago, which results in someone trying to blow them up. I quite liked the ending finding out that it was due to greed on why the guilty party originally organised the bomb, with this fortune putting a wedge between both business partners. Also it is interesting to see how Elizabeth is now coping with the death of her husband and how this has effected her since the last book.

No Longer Human

The third book I read this month was called No Longer Human which is a Japanese book based on an individual who feels out of place. It was interesting to follow this person throughout their life, how they felt the odd one out at a young age and that just got progressively worse as they grew up; I felt quite a lot of this was due to family pressures mainly via his father. Overall it was quite a sad book seeing how someone who never fitted in just made progressively worse decisions and never really faced any consequences for their actions. I would recommend people to check this book out, I think it is a great novel into the human psychology.

The Day of the Triffids

The fourth book I read this month was called The Day of the Triffids, which starts out with the main character waking up at hospital and coming to the realisation that everyone has suddenly became blind. Also there are these plants called triffids within the book with out going into too much detail basically they can kill people via poison and can walk, with most people now being blind I bet you can guess what happens… I think this was probably my favourite book I read this month and highly recommend reading it, don’t be surprised to see more books by John Wyndham in the months to come.

Closing Thoughts

Overall this month I’ve really enjoyed all the books I read and think I got through a good amount. I’m very happy to have discovered John Wyndham as I really enjoyed his work and looking forward to getting through more of his published books. Also quite sad I’ve finally come to the end of The Thursday Murder Club series, here’s to a sixth book please.

Thanks, Nathan.
